The tomatoes have many types and “breads”.Here is a short list for the most common tomato types you’ll bump into while looking for the best match for you:

Tomato is considered as the most common popular garden vegetable in America. For many years, tomatoes (previously called “love apples”) were speculated to be poisonous and they were used for ornamental purposes. There are many types of tomatoes. And the common tomato types are the ones that will be discussed.

It is not hard to propagate tomatoes. They can easily be grown and you can even get an adequate harvest from only a few plants. Tomato is a perennial plant but is often grown outdoors in temperate climates as an annual.

There are many varieties of tomatoes but they are mainly categorized as determinate and indeterminate. Some varieties of tomatoes are determinate while others are indeterminate.

If tomatoes eventually form a flower cluster at the terminal growing point, then they are considered determinate. Most often, they are good choices for container growing. Commercial growers prefer these types of tomatoes for them to harvest a whole field at one time.

However, indeterminate types of tomatoes continue to grow taller and they grow as vines that never top off. They continue producing until they are killed by frost. Local-market farmers and home growers prefer these types of tomatoes because they want them ripe throughout the season.

There are hundreds of varieties of tomatoes which come in various sizes and colors. Some of them weigh a fraction of an ounce on a smaller scale and others can reach over two pounds on a larger scale.

As we all know, the most common color of tomato is red but they also come in yellow, purple, green and black. There are even mixed-colored and striped-colored tomatoes.

These are the common tomato types and varieties:

Currant Tomatoes

These are the smallest among all varieties of tomatoes. Their sizes are just like the size of a pea and have a strong flavor. These kinds of tomatoes are best for garnishing, salads and amusing children. These types of tomatoes have more health benefits compared with other tomato varieties.

  • Grape Tomatoes – These are often sweet in taste and are just like the size of grapes. Like grapes, these varieties are oblong in shape. They are used in salads and vegetable trays with dips and are usually eaten fresh.
  • Cherry Tomatoes – These types of tomatoes may vary in size but generally, they are like the size of bing cherry. An average size of cherry tomatoes is 1” in diameter and they are round. They are often used in salads and are eaten by themselves as a snack.
  • Pear Tomatoes – Pear tomatoes are like the shape of a pear, small on one end and fatter on the other end. They are almost the same size as cherry tomatoes. They also have sweet taste and are usually incorporated in salad or eaten by themselves.
  • Plum/Paste Tomatoes – Plum tomatoes are oblong in shape. They are thicker with less seeds compared with other tomato varieties. They are most often used in pastes and sauces. The most common brand of plum tomatoes is Roma.

Slicing/Globe Tomatoes

These tomatoes are medium-sized tomatoes that are found in stores. Globe tomato is the most common variety. They are incorporated for most cooking types. They are commonly used in preparing hamburgers, sandwiches and salads. That is why they are also called slicing tomatoes.

  • Stuffer Tomatoes – Like peppers these tomatoes have internal hollow structure. These are green in color and are like bell pepper. When you cut them, you can see that the seeds are located right up near the top. They are great for stuffing with chicken salad or tuna fish.
  • Beefsteak Tomatoes – These tomatoes are the largest among all varieties of tomatoes. They can weigh over two pounds but usually around 1 pound or so. They are usually meaty and thick and they are good for garnishments.

These are the most common types of tomatoes, though there are hundreds of varieties available. There are still varieties under each common type of tomatoes.

However, whatever variety you may have, you will surely get nutrients and it will greatly improve every recipe you will make.
