Top tips for growing tomatoes – part I

Tomatoes are not a simple put some seeds in the ground and water it up until you get them type of a vegetable.Actually the tomatoes are quite a handful of work. But the outcome will be something you’ll never imagine! The taste of a fresh home made tomato is something you have to try,do it or find a friend who grows them.

Here are the first tips for growing tomatoes:

  1. Starting tomatoes from seeds: if you start tomatoes from seeds try not to crowd them too much. When I do it , I use a home depot food box, fill it with   planting mixture.I dig a small hole, really not deep, just stick a pencil into the mixture and put a seed in it and cover it.you can start with rows away 3cm – 5cm from each other and inside the rows keep a 2cm distance between each seed.
  2. Sun,sun, sun!!!:Let the seeds a lot of sun after the tomatoes seedlings start to show up.You could even put them under growing lights if you really want to be like in the book (about 16 hour of light a day) .
  3. Wind:the rumors say that if the tomatoes seedings get some wind every day they will get strong roots. So there are people that  give the seedlings some 10 minutes of fan a couple of time a day to let them build strong roots!(heaven,I’m in heaven).
  4. Want early tomatoes? Heat the ground! tomatoes like the heat,so the couple of days before planting the tomatoes plants, cover the planting area with a black cover (Utah bag will do the job). The extra degrees will get you early tomatoes.
  5. Plant them deep! Plant the tomatoes plants deep in the ground,as they are able to grow roots all over their stem.Plant the tomatoes in a hole a bit deeper than the pot the contained the tomato plant.
